The Baggies started last weekend eleven points adrift of safety with five matches left to play in the league this season and they needed to win their midlands derby clash with Wolves to boost their chances of surviving the drop.

Newcastle United are in the final safe place on the Premier League standings and the Baggies were handed a big chance to move within eight points of the Magpies when they lost 2-0 at home to Arsenal.

The Magpies had been on a good run of four games without defeat before the loss at the hands of the Gunners. Egyptian international Mohamed ElNeny and club skipper Pierre-EmerickAubameyang were on target for Arsenal either side of the interval.

That Newcastle United result opened up a window of opportunity for West Brom ahead of the derby meeting with Wolves but they were unable to take full advantage following the 1-1 draw at home to Wolves.

West Brom were second best for the majority of the first half and they went behind on the stroke of half-time to a deflected strike from Wolves attacker Fabio da Silva. The Baggies trailed 1-0 at the break and in need of a big second half performance. West Brom went on to produce a good second half but it was not enough to get the win needed to boost their failing hopes of avoiding relegation from the English top flight.

MbayeDiagnelevelled proceedings for West Brom on 62 minutes but they could not build on that equaliser. The point earned took the Baggies to within ten points of Newcastle United.

West Brom will suffer relegation from the Premier League if they lose to Arsenal in their next game scheduled to take place at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday.
