West Brom appear to be close to hitting the top form this season after managing a point against Crystal Palace in the latest league match. This point came after the club secured a 2-2 draw against Manchester United a few days ago. The team remained comfortably out of relegation trouble for the moment and a lot has to do with the form of striker Saido Berahino. The England under 21 international has come to prominence this campaign after having been a part of West Brom from the youth. The 21-year-old has spent loans spells at various clubs like Brentford and Peterborough United in the last few years.
His incredible rise to prominence is confirmed by the fact that he is just two goals short of leading the Premier League goalscoring charts this campaign. Diego Costa and Sergio Aguero, who cost more than £ 60 million combined, currently leads the table with 9 apiece. The fact that Berahino is English means that he could be on the verge of replacing Wayne Rooney for the next decade. After managing a 2-2 draw with Crystal Palace, manager Irvine says that he sees a lot of Rooney like characteristics in Berahino. Irvine worked closely with Rooney when he was the assistant manager at Everton.
“If you are going to be a top player, you have to have a lot of the full package. Everyone talks about technical, tactical, physical, psychological. You cannot be a top player unless you score highly in all of them. You might score more highly in a couple of areas but you can’t possibly be a top player if you don’t score highly in all. Saido has a lot of that package but he is still at that age where it can go one way or another,” said the West Brom manager.
