West Brom were humbled by Championship side Derby County 1-2 in the third round of the FA Cup when both sides clashed over the weekend.
West Brom went ahead first but the visitors’ netted two quick goals to turn the tides around. The loss will see the Premier League outfit exit the FA Cup.
Albion scored their first and only of the encounter through Matt Phillips in the 35th minute. Phillips hit a well-timed shot past Derby shot stopper Scott Carson to send the hosts one up. After the break, both sides continued the duel but West Brom lost their advantage when Darren Bent scored from 25 yards out six minutes into the half.
After only three minutes, Tom Ince scored a brilliant free kick past the West Brom goalkeeper to send the fans of the visiting team into a frenzy. Derby fans were in both ends, with many having bought tickets through www.livefootballtickets.com after their club sold out their full allocation in just 30 minutes. They were rewarded with some highs and lows during the game, most notably from the Derby goalie – he made an error when he gave out a casual pass to the opponent. It took a lot from Richard Keogh to prevent the shot Salomon Rondon sent in from scoring. However, he redeemed himself with brilliant stops he made during the course of the game.
“It’s about time I got one in. I practice free-kicks a lot in training, and it’s nice to do it on a match day,” excited Ince said of his goal. He added that the kick was from an awkward position and that with three making the wall, he had to be send the ball to the left where there were a lot of space. He said as soon as the ball went over the wall the goalkeeper knew it was in.
West Brom manager Tony Pulis complained of the extra paces the referee made for the wall as he felt it gave the opponents the advantage for the second goal.
