West Bromwich has given Nicolas Anelka a 14 days’ notice about the termination of his contract which happened sometime after the Frenchman made his controversial goal celebration during West Bromwich’s match against West Ham.
Anelka scored twice against West Ham on December 28 but the gesture he made is associated with anti-Semitic sentiments which led to him receiving a 5 match ban as well as having his relationship with West Bromwich deteriorating until the point where the club has sacked the former Chelsea player.
According to the Premier League club, they have taken the decision of sacking Anelka because of his gross misconduct.
“Nicolas Anelka’s purported termination of his Premier League contract this evening via social media was invalid as this was not conducted under the correct legal process as required by his contract,” the club said in a statement.
“The club considers the conduct of Nicolas Anelka on December 28, coupled with his purported termination on social media this evening, to be gross misconduct. As a result the club has tonight written to Nicolas Anelka giving him 14 days’ notice of termination as required under his contract.” The club revealed.
The former Manchester City player tweeted that he had intentions of quitting the Premier League club.
“Following my talks with the club I’ve been told I could be back in the squad under certain conditions that I can’t agree. As I want to preserve my integrity I’ve decided to free myself and to put an end to my contract with WBA with immediate effect.” Anelka said via tweeter.
Anelka’s sacking could be the end of a long career for the 35 years old forward who has played with some of Europe’s top club including Chelsea, Arsenal, Real Madrid, Liverpool and Juventus just to name a few.
