MEL WELCOMED

Steven Reid has welcomed the appointment of Pepe Mel as the new manager of West Bromwich Albion, but, at the same time, he has also praised Keith Downing for doing a decent job as the caretaker manager.

Mel will have his first meeting with the West Brom team later today. The Baggies have to play their next match in about a weeks’ time and that’s good for Mel as he will be able to utilize that time to know the players. Going straight into the game without knowing the squad well is never easy for a manager.

Mel will have his first meeting with the West Brom team later today. The Baggies have to play their next match in about a weeks’ time and that’s good for Mel as he will be able to utilize that time to know the players. Going straight into the game without knowing the squad well is never easy for a manager.

According to Reid, he doesn’t know Mel personally, but, he has read that the Spaniard has got amazing managerial qualities and that’s why, he is excited to play under his guidance.

Talking to the reporters in the evening yesterday, the 32 years old defender said, “I haven’t interacted with Pepe personally ever, but, the reports that I have read suggest that he is a fine manager, so, it’s good that he has come to our camp. I hope that he turns things around and we begin moving up in the points table.”

When asked about the caretaker manager Downing, Reid said, “He deserves a lot of credit; that’s for sure. He was given charge at a tough time and he steadied things brilliantly. It was a shame that we couldn’t win the last match that he managed, but, he did a fantastic job for the club.”

If the Baggies have to keep themselves completely away from the relegation zone, they will have to ensure that they don’t drop too many points from now on. However, that’s not easy at all because they are going to be up against strong teams in the next few weeks.
