The Premier League side went ahead through Gareth McAuley as he headed a Matt Phillips free kick. Northampton were determined to test their limits, so they fought hard to get the equalizer through Alex Revell. The extra 30 minutes given after the regular time couldn’t separate both sides as the score didn’t change. West Brom forward Saido Berahino – ex-Northampton player, threw his penalty kick wide, and Northampton’s John-Joe O’Toole played his kick into the hands of the goal keeper. Darren Fletcher and Alex Revell scored theirs until James Morrison’s turn. Morrison missed his kick, leaving Kenji Gorre to send the Northamptons to the next stage of the EFL when he converted his kick.

An excited Gorre said: “When it left my boot I knew it was in and I started running before it hit the net. We had our fans close by and they were great throughout the whole game. To run over to them was class. They were so loud, I just started running to everyone.”

West Ham manager Tony Pulis was humbled with the loss but admitted that Northampton really worked hard to get the victory. He claimed he understood what the supporters were going through, considering the loss. Northampton are no strangers to defeating top teams in the EFL Cup having done so to 13 teams since the 2003/04 season. The victory sends them to the next stage of the tournament.
