West Brom Scrape By Relegation

West Brom suffered yet another defeat in the Premier League after a 2-0 loss at the hands of Sunderland. The club came into the match still with the threat of relegation intact. They needed to get three points in order to be sure of relegation, which was possible if Norwich managed a win over Arsenal on the final day of the season. The club, though, managed to still stay in the Premier league despite a defeat after Sunderland’s victory meant that Norwich will join the likes of Cardiff and Fulham as the relegated clubs this season.

Even though West Brom have survived this season, they are unlikely to retain manager Pepe Mel going into next season. After coming to the club after the January transfer window, the manager took a long time to get his first win under their belt. The former Real Betis man came with a big reputation for taking average clubs to overachieve. This has not been the case with West Brom, as they have only narrowly avoided relegation. After the match, Mel said that he was deeply disappointed with this defeat, but he is now hoping that the new season will promise good for the club.

He says that he wants to reward the fans for their support by winning the last game of the season.

“I’m very disappointed, particularly with the first half. Sunderland defeated us in terms of intensity, in terms of winning the second balls and going into tackles strongly. I believe that we weren’t as convincing. It was a case of putting out fresh players, players who hadn’t played as much, but the result wasn’t much of a good one. I hope that on Sunday we can change the image that we give of ourselves. I’m sure the fans won’t be very happy,” said the manager.
